The Swiss city Fribourg (Freiburg), capital of the similarly named canton, is a beautiful city with many lovely historic buildings set in the meandering valley of the River Sarine (Saane). Fribourg claims to have the largest number of historic buildings in Switzerland, including over 200 Gothic buildings, almost 2,000 m of town walls, and 14 medieval towers.
The views from either river bank are magnificent but the best views are from the top of the cathedral tower — around 400 steps to the top.
The Espace Jean Tinguely Niki de Saint Phalle in Fribourg (Freiburg) in Switzerland is an art gallery or museum with working models designed by the local-born artist Jean Tinguely and some colorful works by his equally famous wife. The Gutenberg Museum focuses on the printing industry that remains important in this Swiss university city.
Fribourg is a great city for walking in but with steep inclines when descending down to the river or scaling the valley banks. Local buses are handy for hikers unable to manage the steep inclines.
