The welcoming Leukerbad Therme (previously Burgerbad) is a family-friendly hot springs thermal pool facility in the heart of Loèche-les-Bains in the Swiss Alps in Valais Valley not far from Lake Geneva. It is the largest spa resort in Switzerland. Leukerbad Therme has ten warm water pools of various sizes and temperatures with water jets and waterfalls. Kids enjoy the special pool for toddlers while the fast all-weather water slides are popular with children of all ages. The emphasis at Leukerbad Therme (Burgerbad) is on fun – spa and beauty treatments are available but the nearby upmarket Walliser Alpentherme is a better day spa choice for adults.

Leukerbad Therme is the most popular spa facility in Leukerbad (Loèche-les-Bains). The large thermal bath complex sports ten hot water pools with the mineral-rich waters reaching temperatures ranging from 28 °C to 44 °C. The hot spring spas attracted visitors for centuries but the current wellness center uses very clean, modern facilities.

The indoor and outdoor pools are open year-round and sport many additional features such as whirlpools, waterfalls, and massage jets to make them more fun and more relaxing. Leukerbad Therme (Burgerbad) also has a 25-m outdoor pool, as well as special play pools for toddlers and young children. The indoor pool also has a rare swim-up pool bar.

The all-weather toboggan water slides (Wasserrutschbahnen) are also top attractions. The 106-m tube slide (Burgerblitz) and the 126-m regular water slide (Badnerblitz) are very popular with children of all ages – Swiss pensioners certainly do not let children have all the fun alone.

Although the mineral-rich waters of the thermal baths in Leukerbad should have many health benefits, the emphasis at the Leukerbad Therme is certainly on having fun. The thermal springs and hot tub offer a great place to relax in hot spring water after enjoying winter sports (skiing, snow hiking, tobogganing) or exploring the great outdoors in summer (hiking, mountain biking).

The sauna and Turkish steam bath spa area (Saunalandschaft) at the Leukerbad Therme include a variety of saunas, steam rooms, and outdoor areas. The minimum age is 16 years as this adult area is a textile-free zone, i.e. nude and genders are mixed. It is OK to cover with a towel and wear a robe when moving around or in the relaxation area but no swimming costumes should be worn. However, do sit on a towel in the dry saunas.

The Saunalandschaft is charged for separately and is not open to children under 16.

Leukerbad Therme also offers special private spa and beauty treatments priced separately from the regular admission fee.

The thermal pools of Leukerbad Therme are open daily from 8 am to 8 pm. The sauna and steam baths are open from 10 am to 7 pm. (Hours are sometimes slightly longer in the winter season.)

Families with children should enquire about the operating hours of the water slides – they usually are in use from around 10:30 (and close earlier than the pools) but the exact times depend on the season.

Basic admission to the Leukerbad Therme is CHF30 for three hours or CHF37 for the full day but only one entry. Children 6 to 16 pay CHF18, and free for children under 6 years old.

Add CHF15 for the sauna and Turkish steam bath, or use the saunas for CHF25 without access to the main pools. (Admission to the saunas is only for over 16-year-olds. Younger children are not allowed to enter, even when accompanied by parents.)

Hotel guests staying overnight in Leukerbad receive a 15% discount with the Leukerbad Guest Card. Many après ski and cable car package deals are available to reduce costs.

In recent years, the admission fees at the Leukerbad Therme were simplified but often increased the price for families with children. It is always worth enquiring if any special family deals or combination offers with meals or other activities are on offer. Of all the thermal bath resorts in Switzerland, none are more fun for families with children than the Leukerbad Therme.

Although there is a small parking garage in the basement of the Leukerbad Therme, arriving on public transportation in Leukerbad is always a good idea. The bus from the Leuk train station (in the Rhone Valley) stops directly at the Therme.
